New transport development will be implemented in relation to Várbazár, funded by budget of the Buda Castle and surroundings transport development project. The beneficiary of the project is the Local Government of Buda Castle, 6.4 billion forint was granted for the 2007-2013 period. The goal of the project, carried out by the Local Government, is to create an easy access to vehicle-free Buda Castle, with advanced transport links, in the spirit of tradition and continuous innovation.
Conversion of Buda Castle pedestrian area into a network creates an attractive living area which is offering space for vibrant social life and satisfying 21st century demands, strengthen municipal and local identity. The first phase of the project includes, among others, the development of pedestrian traffic towards the Várbazár and the modernization of Buda Castle access control system.
In the Nordic Pavilion a new reception space and elevators will be developed, at the Southern Corinthian wall, next to the Vízhordó stairs, an escalator is planned to be built, carrying visitors to the Castle Terrace. People then can go further to the Castle by elevators.
New parking garage
The investment is focusing on individual road users as well by providing adequate parking spaces around the Castle. To achieve this goal a brand new parking garage is going to be built under Várbazár, funded also by the Local Government of Budapest District 1.
Wheelchair access to Buda Castle will be provided by new elevators at Gránit léőcső, Korlát utca and Lovas utca car park. In the first phase, both, the Buda Castle parking management & access control system and the attached closed circuit surveillance camera system will be modernized and developed.
The Gate of Buda Castle
The next phase of the transport development is targeting the renovation and traffic calming of Ybl Miklós tér and Lánchíd utca area. In the area of Buda Castle Gate the focus is on also traffic calming, public park building and providing road connections for the new Várbazár garage. The overall project is aiming to increase the pedestrian areas, provide pedestrian permeability and build a new tram stop.
